WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Two Congressmen from Region Introduce Bipartisan Legislation to Prevent Syrian Intervention

Past Moreland Act Comission Fell Short

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Moreland Act Commission to investigate the legislature is not the first time a governor created a panel to probe state lawmakers. In fact, Cuomo’s own father did it a quarter century ago, with mixed results.

When Andrew Cuomo’s father, Mario Cuomo was governor back in the 1980’s, he also called on the powers in the now 100-year-old Moreland Act to appoint a commission to look into government corruption.

City Councils Take Comments on Fighter Jet, South Burlington Reverses Position on F-35

The U.S. Air Force is expected to decide where it will base the new F-35 fighter jets by the end of the year. The Burlington International Airport, which houses the Vermont National Guard, is one of the preferred sites.  Two cities near the flight path for the proposed F-35 fighter jet held hearings last night regarding the Air Force plan to house the plane in Vermont. One of the city councils reversed a previous vote and will now support the new jet.

In his “History of the Decline and Fall of The Roman Empire,” Edward Gibbon wrote: “All that is human must retrograde if it does not advance.”  More to the point of American history, the Irish philosopher, George Berkley (in 1752) paraphrased John Quincy Adams’ note: “Westward the course of empire takes its way,” thus: “The first four acts already past, a fifth shall close the drama with the day:  time’s noblest offspring is the last.”

County Nursing Home Impasse Continues

The Albany County Executive has been on a mission to privatize the 250-bed Albany County Nursing Home, while county legislators have been heading in the opposite direction, trying to keep the facility not-for-profit and under county control.  

On Monday, the Albany County Legislature voted to authorize McCoy to retain a law firm to assist in formation of a local development corporation to manage the facility. McCoy says he cannot legally do that.

Bard College And A University In China Create A Joint Music Program

A college in New York with a well-known conservatory is teaming up with a new school of music in China to offer a joint music program. The dean of the music school in China says the approach is entirely different for his country, and the partnership is all the first of its kind for the conservatory.

Defense Furloughs Start Today

Furloughs of civilian workers for the U.S. Department of Defense begin today.  The mandatory days off without pay were ordered by the Secretary of Defense as a result of the across the board federal budget cuts known as sequestration.  About 700 employees at the Westover Air Force Reserve Base in Chicopee, Massachusetts are affected.   WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with the public affairs officer for the 439th  Airlift Wing  Air Force Master Sergeant Andrew Biscoe.
