WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Voters In Berkshire Town Defeat Amendments To Wind Turbine Bylaw

Voters in a small Berkshire County community earlier this week voted against a proposal that many some are arguing would open the town up for more wind energy development. The move comes at a time when more small Western Massachusetts towns are planning for their futures with wind energy in mind.

At a special town meeting Monday evening in the small Berkshire County town of Peru, voters rejected a proposed bylaw amendment that would have raised the noise threshold for wind turbines operating in the town.

Friends Remember Toshi Seeger

Toshi Seeger died Tuesday at the age of 91. The wife of folk music legend Peter Seeger is being remembered as an activist, filmmaker, and a woman with a profound influence on her husband.

Hal Cohen is a founding member of Beacon-based Clearwater, an environmental organization of which Pete Seeger is also a founding member.

Cohen says she was a role model for him, and helped with such challenges like founding Clearwater.

Yassin Aref, the Albany imam convicted of material support for terrorism along with pizzeria owner Mohammed Hossain after a 2006 FBI sting, is preparing to file a new appeal asking for a new trial. This after Aref discovered significant new evidence about his case.

Sean Philpott: In Sickness and In Health

Just two weeks ago, the US Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, which barred federal recognition of same-sex marriages even if they took place in one of the 13 states or in the federal district where such weddings are legal. In a 5–4 decision, the Court ruled that key sections of the Act were unconstitutional because they deprived same-sex couples of liberties protected by the Fifth Amendment.
