WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Mass. Interim DTA Commissioner Provides Update On Programs To Stop Welfare Fraud

A recently released audit reports that welfare benefits were paid out to more than 1,000 people who were deceased in Massachusetts. The report comes at a time when the state Department of Transitional Assistance is conducting a top to bottom review of its practices in light of a report showing the potential for fraud released by the state Inspector General earlier this year.

Hudson Valley County Exec Hits The Road For Local Government Reform

The Ulster County executive is behind a statewide tour to learn how municipalities in New York are best coping with fiscal challenges. This comes during an era of unfunded mandates and a two-percent property tax cap. He says the idea is to prevent communities from becoming distressed or on the brink of bankruptcy.

The initiative is called PAYGo NY. Ulster County Executive Michael Hein says it harkens back to a philosophy of pay as you go. Hein is also president of the New York State County Executives Association.

Philosophy professors at San Jose State University said they refuse to use material from an on-line course taught by Harvard professor, Michael Sandel, for fear administrators were angling to cut departmental expenses.

James Brooke, Voice of America - Russians On The Boston Marathon Bombings

James Brooke will come home to the Berkshires this week. A native of Lenox, who attended Berkshire Country Day School and Yale University, has been a lifelong foreign correspondent, most recently covering Russia and the former Soviet Union for the Voice of America. 

James Brooke will be at the Lenox Library tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. for a free lecture on how Russia views the Boston Marathon, now that one Tsarnaev brother is dead, and another is in custody. He spoke today with WAMC’s Brian Shields.
