WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

NY Governor Visits Vassar To Tout Women's Equality Act

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was in Poughkeepsie Wednesday as part of his tour to push his Women’s Equality Act. Meanwhile, a Hudson Valley state Assemblyman is calling on Cuomo to have Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver removed from office following what could be a new development in the Vito Lopez sexual harassment case.

Cuomo spoke at Vassar College, urging the roomful of supporters to make the Women’s Equality Act a reality before the fast approaching end of this year’s legislative session.

Massachusetts Ranks Second In National Clean Energy Report

The recently released 2013 Clean Tech Leadership Index published by Clean Edge Incorporated, has ranked Massachusetts second behind only California in an overall ranking that scores states on measures to promote energy efficiency, industry policy, technology development and capital investment.

New York also made the top 10 and was ranked 4th.

NY Farmers Want 2% Ag Assessment Cap

The New York Farm Bureau’s efforts to cap rising agricultural property taxes are gaining legislative momentum.

While Governor Andrew Cuomo touts his business-boosting Tax Free New York proposal, the state's farmers are thirsting for relief: New York farmers pay $38.41 per acre in property taxes, according to Farm Credit East. That is the second highest rate in the country.

Berkshire Lawmaker Leads Subcommittee On Student Loan Debt

The Massachusetts legislature has formed a subcommittee to gather data and hear from students and educators across the commonwealth on the real impact of student loan debt.

Democratic State Representative Paul Mark, of the Second Berkshire district, a member of the Joint Committee on Higher Education, is serving as co-chair of the five member subcommittee that is tasked with investigating the rapid rise of student loan debt among current students and recent graduates.
