WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Green Your Commute

Today is the day to embrace "People Power" across the land.

That "People Power" is being expressed as "pedal power" - it is "National Bike To Work Day," celebrated annually coast-to-coast on the third Friday in May, which happens to be National Bike Month. The New York adaptation is "Green Your Commute Day" - it is being championed by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Joe Martens.

Stakeholders Raise Concerns Over PCB Cleanup In Berkshires

Representatives of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, General Electric, and the state governments of Connecticut and Massachusetts, recently met with stakeholders to provide updates on the cleanup plan for removing PCB’s from the Housatonic River and Silver Lake in Pittsfield.

At an EPA Housatonic River Citizens Coordinating Council meeting at the Lenox Library Wednesday evening, community stakeholders raised concerns over information presented on a status update of the cleanup project at Silver Lake in Pittsfield.

With Jennings Out, Corey Ellis Takes Another Run At Albany Mayor

Twenty-four hours after Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings made public his letter stating that he will not run for another term after 20 years in office, the Albany County Democratic Committee gave its nomination to City Treasurer Kathy Sheehan in the race for mayor. The committee passed over former City Council member Corey Ellis, who ran against Mayor Jennings four years ago fir the Democratic nomination.

Wednesday on Midday Magazine, we heard from Sheehan. Today, we speak with Corey Ellis, who says the lack of the party's nomination will not affect his campaign.

Albany County Executive Dan McCoy has been on a mission to privatize the County Nursing Home, favoring a lease agreement with the Upstate Services Group, a company that provides administrative and operational support to affiliated skilled nursing facilities throughout New York.
