The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

It's been a hot-button issue: the continuing saga of what to do about the Albany County Nursing Home.

Albany County Executive Dan McCoy has been on a mission to privatize the County Nursing Home, favoring a lease agreement with the Upstate Services Group, a company that provides administrative and operational support to affiliated skilled nursing facilities throughout New York.

Paul Elisha: Change

This Commentator had decided to devote his essay for today to the two documents which have hung above the desk in his work space, since they were awarded to him, by then Governor Mario M. Cuomo, for his participation and help in achieving major ethics legislation in New York State, on August 7th, 1987.  He was going to note how time and trials had wrought changes, which made these documents less important mementos of prior, experience and would then, perhaps, look forward to another time, for yet another, more important change.  This might even surpass what was then achieved, to legislate even more important advances in governmental ethics.  Alas, it now appears that this will not occur.

The term "welfare state" is a pejorative for many in the U.S., a system that many elected officials would distance themselves from, but the term is used with pride by Peter Taksøe-Jensen, the Danish Ambassador to the U.S., who will be visiting Vermont next weekend, at the invitation of U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders. The ambassador, who spoke to WAMC today, will meet with the public in Burlington, Brattleboro and Montpelier to discuss the Danish form of government.

Report Shows Declining School Enrollment in the Hudson Valley

School enrollment is declining in New York’s Hudson Valley. A new report shows projections through 2020, and already has three years of numbers demonstrating the downward trend.

The report, entitled “The Empty Classroom Syndrome,” looks at enrollment projections for 114 public school districts across nine Hudson Valley counties – Columbia, Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester. Newburgh-based non-profit planning and policy organization Pattern for Progress released the report. Here’s Pattern’s President and CEO Jonathan Drapkin.

The three-week Safe Prom Berkshire County campaign is a project of the Pittsfield Prevention Partnership and the Berkshire Family Focus. With information passed on to teens and parents through community businesses and partners, and an online social media strategy, the campaign hopes to encourage safe behavior and prevent automobile accidents.
