WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Push Is On For NY Fair Elections

Proponents of fair elections, particularly in New York, argue that ordinary citizens are denied a real chance at being heard in an election because running for office is expensive and the average citizen is unable contribute substantial sums of money to help fund any given campaign.

Supporters say a fair elections law would restore trust in government by giving prospective candidates for office access to public funding. For example: for each dollar raised, a taxpayer-financed public fund would match that dollar with six dollars.

Paul Elisha: Courageous Voices Needed To Save America!

When the conservative-driven hierarchy of the U.S. Supreme Court dared to re-design the framework of corporate essence into a temporal twin of individual human qualities and characteristics, it did so without a schematic of definitive qualifications.  As a result, the outcome was essentially left “up-for-grabs.”  In American political parlance, that translates into the singular forensic phrase:  “To the highest bidder.”

Debate Over Higher Cigarette Tax Flares Up

A coalition of anti-smoking groups is calling on Vermont legislators to pass a cigarette tax increase.  But businesses that operate near the state’s borders say previous tax increases have led to revenue losses and any further hikes would mean even less traffic.

Plattsburgh Ranks Well in Global Cities of the Future Survey

Foreign Direct Investment magazine has issued its biennial ‘Cities of the Future’ rankings.  Montreal and New York City rank highly on the major metropolitan lists. Plattsburgh, New York also ranks in the top five micropolitan areas of economic potential.
