WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Greenfield Passes Moratorium on Biomass Energy Plants

The town council of Greenfield, Massachusetts has voted to approve a 14-month moratorium on industrial biomass power generators and all waste-to-energy projects until September, 2014.

It’s believed that the 14 month moratorium on industrial size biomass burning and all waste to energy projects in Greenfield is the first of its kind in Massachusetts.   Eleven members of the 12-member town council approved the moratorium, with one member abstaining.

The vote came after a petition was submitted to the town council with a large amount of support from town residents.

Disaster Mental Health Conference Focuses On Radiological Readiness

There’s a conference tomorrow in New York that will focus on preparedness for nuclear disasters and other radiation emergencies. It’s an opportunity to think about and plan for some worst-case scenarios.

It’s the Institute for Disaster Mental Health’s 10th annual conference, and this year’s topic is “Radiological Readiness: Preparing for Dirty Bombs, Nuclear Disasters, and Other Radiation Emergencies.” Dr. James Halpern is the director of the Institute at the State University of New York at New Paltz.

NYS GOP Chair Floats Names to Challenge Governor Cuomo

NYS GOP Chairman Ed Cox

Five names were recently floated as potential candidates to challenge New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the 2014 election. Four of the five are in the Hudson Valley.

Ed Cox is chairman of the New York State Republican Party.

One is Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino.

He refers to running for county executive. And the federal agency he says he is battling is the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, over aspects of an affordable housing agreement. As to whether he is ruling out a run for governor, Astorino replies:

Vigil in Pittsfield Honors Victims of Boston Marathon Explosions

Local clergy met with members of the Pittsfield community at the Lichtenstein art gallery to hold a candlelight vigil to pay tribute to victims of the bomb attacks at the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Three were killed and more than 170 were wounded in the attacks.

The public joined an interfaith prayer service to remember those lost.

Quentin Chin, Interim Pastor at the South Baptist Church in Pittsfield, led songs and prayers.

"This is an opportunity really for all of us to find some sort of expression in ritual action," said Chin.

Living Wage Campaign Expands In Western Massachusetts

Massachusetts State Senate President Therese Murray last week raised the possibility of a debate in the legislature this year on raising the state’s minimum wage. Noting that both New York and Maine plan to raise their minimum wages, Murray said there is a growing gap between the $8 per hour minimum wage and a living wage in Massachusetts.  WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Kitty Callaghan, a member of the Living Wage Western Massachusetts steering committee.
