WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Critics Express Concerns Over Funding Plan Approved For Tappan Zee Bridge Project

A coalition of environmental and advocacy organizations and Assembly members met via conference call on Thursday to express their dismay over the approval by the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation to use, for the first time, clean water funds for a transportation project. The critics say using the funds for the bridge project could have negative consequences for every community across the state.

Fierce Campaign Expected On Massachusetts Casino Referendum

Nathan Bech, who organized a campaign to defeat a proposed casino in West Springfield, will be one of several grassroots activists campaigning to repeal the state's casino law in November.

When the Massachusetts legislature voted three years ago to legalize casino gambling after decades of debate, it appeared the only fights left would be over where the casinos would be built. But now both sides on the charged issue are gearing up to win the hearts and minds of the state’s voters, who will decide in November if Las Vegas-style gambling will in fact have a home in Massachusetts.

Albany Supports No Casino

With the casino application deadline fast approaching in New York, the city of Albany is apparently not supporting any of the projects proposed for neighboring cities.

Local municipal approval is required for applicants seeking one of four casino licenses expected to be granted in upstate New York this fall. The developers face a Monday deadline to submit their casino applications. More than a dozen development groups are in the running to apply for a license.

Former Mass. AG Harshbarger: Ruling Means Casinos Can Be Stopped

Former Massachusetts Attorney General Scott Harshbarger has been providing free legal advice to those working to repeal the state's casino law. The State Supreme Judicial Court ruled on Tuesday that a ballot question to repeal the law can be placed on the statewide ballot on election day in November. Harshbarger says he was excited and satisfied by the courts decision to allow the vote.
