The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Saratoga Springs City Council Adopts Resolution Against Casino Law

The Saratoga Springs City Council unanimously passed a resolution opposing New York’s casino gambling law Tuesday night.

Hundreds of area residents packed into Saratoga Springs City Hall Tuesday. The room was seemingly split down the middle, red shirts on one side, white on the other – the colors associated with groups against and for casino expansion at the Saratoga Casino and Raceway.

Northampton Activist Part Of Gaza Delegation

A peace activist from Northampton, Massachusetts is part of a delegation of 100 women who are traveling to Gaza for International Women’s Day on March 8th.   Paki Wieland was just released from a jail in New York. She was among a group of a dozen people convicted of disorderly conduct as a result of a protest outside the Hancock Air National Guard Base.    WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Wieland about the air base protest and the trip to Gaza.

Herbert London: Resetting Russian Policy

With Russian armed forces seizing control of the Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, President Putin has sent a loud and clear message to President Obama. In effect, Putin contends the U.S. support for the political upheaval that dislodged a Kremlin ally, means little in the face of the Russian bear clearly intent on reacquiring “the near-abroad” – those nations lost with the dismemberment of the Soviet Union.

Buchwald: Strip Pensions From Convicted Officials

A freshman state lawmaker says there is growing support for a bill that would strip the pension benefits from any elected official in New York, or state employee, who is convicted of a felony that’s a violation of their public duties. The bill is sponsored in the Assembly by White Plains Democrat David Buchwald.

Member Of First Same-Sex Couple Married In New Paltz Reflects 10 Years Later

It has been 10 years since the first same-sex marriage ceremonies were performed in Ulster County’s New Paltz. New York would not legalize same-sex marriages for another seven years. Yesterday on Midday Magazine, we heard an archival report from February 2004 on the first day of gay weddings. Today, one member of the first same-sex couple married that day reflects. Billiam van Roestenberg spoke with WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne about then and now.

Paul Elisha: Teach Your Children Well

There’s been much angst expressed by parents of America’s children and youth, of late, about the rapid erosion of funds and services, to provide education needed to prepare them for appropriate and gainfully competitive adulthood.  There’s also been a mounting volume of critical carping and castigation by those in government, responsible for providing the funds necessary to achieve adequate levels of education and warnings of dire consequence, from those invested with the onus to plan and produce educational services at superior levels of educational accomplishment, from the President and throughout his executive departments.
