WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Bus Crash That Killed Teen Brings Calls For Increased Safety

A crash earlier this month that killed a teenage boy in the Adirondacks has brought calls on New York state government to increase oversight of the rafting and tubing industries. 

The crash that killed 15-year-old tubing guide Hunter Scofield on July 5th in Lake Luzerne is still under state police investigation, and many are now working to prevent similar accidents.

Springfield Police Commissioner John Barbieri — on the job just five weeks — has made his first public report.  Crime is down in Massachusetts’ third- largest city and the police commissioner has a plan to keep it that way.

Police Commissioner Barbieri told the Springfield City Council’s Public Safety Committee Tuesday night that he is making “incremental changes” as part of a five-point reorganization plan designed to make the police department more pro-active in preventing crime.
