More Questions About Oil Trains After Derailments

Citizens living along the Hudson River in downtown Albany are in a heightened state of awareness and worry over those so-called "oil trains" that routinely roll through their backyards.

On Friday, federal and state authorities participated in a series of inspections at the Port of Albany and its adjacent rail yard, as well as inspections in Albany and Buffalo along rail tracks and in rail cars. Inspectors found oil tank cars with wheel defects and brake shoe defects.

Community Corner: Bob Cohen, Citizen Action Of New York And Public Policy And Education Fund

Consumers and small businesses have until March 31st to enroll in New York’s state health exchange under the Affordable Care Act, New York State of Health.

Bob Cohen is Policy Director of Citizen Action of New York and Public Policy and Education Fund, one of the organizations that serves as a “healthcare navigator” to assist individuals in enrolling.

WAMC’s Lucas Willard spoke with Cohen about New York’s approach to the Affordable Care Act, and what he’d like to see changed.

Congressman Maloney Holds Telephone Town Hall On Heroin Addiction

New York Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney held an emergency telephone town hall Thursday night to discuss the heroin epidemic and prescription drug problem in the Hudson Valley. He was joined by four speakers who offered insight into how they are addressing both the heroin and prescription drug overdose surge in the region.

“I am the heartbroken mother of a beautiful 23-year-old daughter who is a heroin addict. She started with heroin about three years ago. She never took prescription pills. She started straight with heroin.”

She wants to get her daughter some help.
