The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Harness Racetrack Gets Nod For First Massachusetts Casino

A harness racing track has been chosen by Massachusetts gambling regulators as the site of the state’s first casino.  If all goes according to schedule, the casino that will have up to 1,250 slot machines, but no table games, will open just over a year from now.

       The Massachusetts Gaming Commission, in the most significant decision of its two years in existence, voted 3-2 on Thursday to offer a license to Penn National Gaming to operate a slot machine parlor at the Plainridge harness racetrack.  The track is in Plainville on the Rhode Island border.

New York Lt. Gov. Duffy Announces Nano Utica Construction Ahead Of Schedule

The Cuomo Administration has announced a construction milestone at the so-called Nano Utica initiative.

On Thursday, New York Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy visited the SUNY Institute of Technology in Utica to announce that construction is ahead of schedule on the Computer Chip Commercialization Center. Also known as Quad-C, the $125 million project is part of the Cuomo Administration’s Nano Utica initiative, led by the SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany and SUNY IT.

Retracing The Steps Of Solomon Northup In Saratoga Springs

The story of Solomon Northup, a free man lured from New York and sold into slavery in 1841, is now known by a worldwide audience thanks to the Oscar-nominated film 12 Years A Slave. The film, directed by Steve McQueen, shares the title of the narrative written by Northup after his rescue in 1853.
