WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Police Department To Hold Citizen's Academy

Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan, Saratoga Springs Mayor Joanne Yepsen and Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren — all new officeholders — participated Wednesday in an Albany Law School forum called  “Leading a New Era in City Government: Women Mayors of Upstate New York.”

The public event at the school’s Dean Alexander Moot Courtroom gave attendees a personal glimpse into not only the day-to-day challenges faced by the three Democrats and their municipalities, but also their individual governing styles and the paths they took to leadership.

The deadly violence continues in Ukraine with unconfirmed reports of up to 70 deaths today in Kiev as protestors clash with government forces. For a closer look at the reasons behind the events in the former Soviet Republic, WAMC spoke with Dr. Nadieszda Kizenko, associate professor in the University at Albany history department. Kizenko says despite media reports in the West, there is much more behind the revolt beside public opposition to closer ties with Russia rather than Europe.
