WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

The Vote: Getting Young Voters To The Polls In Off-Year Elections

Voter turnout in off-year elections is generally much lower than in presidential election years, and turnout among young voters is no exception. Three politicians who have set records for being the youngest in one political office or another have ideas about where the problems lie. A Look Back At 'Superstorm' Sandy...

Oct. 29 marks the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy's destructive landfall.

One year ago, Hurricane Sandy devastated the Eastern Seaboard with high winds, heavy rain and a storm surge of more than 13 feet, claiming 44 lives and displacing thousands. The Superstorm turned the greatest city in the world into a city of darkness and called new attention to climate change.

Municipal Moratoriums Confront Medical Marijuana License Applicants

Voters in Massachusetts overwhelmingly approved legalizing medical marijuana in 2012. But many local communities are putting temporary bans in place as the deadline for final applications for state licensed marijuana treatment centers approaches.

About a third of the state’s 351 cities and towns have put in place moratoriums on medical marijuana treatment centers, according to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office. Springfield is the largest city in the state to adopt a moratorium. It was approved by the city council Monday night.

Group Urges Anti-Corruption Commission To Probe Big Pharma Campaign Donations

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s anti-corruption commission held another hearing Monday evening focusing on reforming the state’s campaign finance system.  A reform group is out with a report that they say raises questions about five million dollars spent on lobbying and donations by the pharmaceutical industry.

SPAC Announces New Partnership With Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center

The Saratoga Performing Arts Center has announced a new partnership to bring more chamber music to its summer lineup of events.

At the Spa Little theater at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center Monday, SPAC President and CEO Marcia White announced that the world-renowned Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center will make SPAC its new summer home.

"It will launch a partnership that will position SPAC as the destination of choice of world-class chamber music in the summer," said White.

NY Assemblymembers Urge Social Media Sites To Clamp Down On Gun Sales

Two New York assemblymembers are calling on social media companies to ban gun sales without background checks. The legislators say the sites are being used as marketplaces for such sales, but a state firearms advocacy group says it’s a non-issue.

Reviewer Rob Edelman takes a look at the history of slavery in cinema upon the release of 12 Years A Slave...

For sure, 12 Years A Slave is one of the best films not just of the season but of the year. However, there is one point about the subject matter explored in the film that deserves to be challenged. At the start of the Toronto Film Festival press conference for 12 Years A Slave, the film’s director, Steve McQueen, casually observed that the subject of slavery “hasn’t been given a platform in cinema.” Well, this simply is not so.
