WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Top Labor Official Hails Massachusetts Jobs Report

The unemployment rate in Massachusetts has dropped to a six-year low. The state recorded a 5.6 percent unemployment rate in May, a drop of four-tenths percent from April.  The report ,earlier this week from the state labor department ,said the number of people working in Massachusetts was the most in almost 25 years.   WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Massachusetts Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Rachel Kaprielian.

Hard Rock International Joins Rensselaer Casino Plan

Hard Rock Cafe has dropped into the competition for a regional casino on a 24-acre site along the banks of the Hudson River.

De Laet's Landing in the city of Rensselaer is where Hard Rock International, with partners David Flaum and Capital Region OTB, would like to site a $150 to $200 million gambling resort. Earlier this month, the common council voted 6 to 1 approving the casino project. Rensselaer Mayor Dan Dwyer:  "That name is going to draw a lot of people."

New Springfield Bishop Makes Good First Impression

A new spiritual leader has been appointed for the 230,000 Roman Catholics in western Massachusetts. Bishop Mitchell Rozanski will replace Bishop Timothy McDonnell as head of the Springfield diocese. The new bishop left a good first impression, but will face many challenges.
