WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Herbert London: Egyptian Turmoil

The journalistic gunslingers have been out in full force targeting General el-Sisi and the new Egyptian constitution. This criticism, by the way, is bipartisan; it comes from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. What it comes down to is persistent doubt that the government’s pledge to steer Egypt toward a new era of freedom and democracy after the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood is genuine.

Unemployment Stats: Read Between The Lines

The state Labor Department says New York’s unemployment rate decreased from 7.4 percent to 7.1 percent in December, its lowest level since January 2009. Numbers for the Capital Region tell a slightly different story...

The unemployment rate in the Capital Region fell to a low of 5.4 percent in December. That's lowest number for the 12th month of the year since 2007 - but the number of workers making up the labor force stands at about 437,000, the lowest December figure since 2000.

Remembering Pete Seeger & His Music

His music catalog and social activism spanned six decades, but now a major folk voice has been silenced. Beacon resident Pete Seeger died Monday night in  New York City  after being hospitalized for six days.
 

As a teenager in 1936, Seeger joined the Young Communist League. An early recording features Seeger on "c" for Conscription, a track that appeared on Songs for John Doe, the 1941 debut album of the Almanac Singers, an influential early folk music group.
