WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Saratoga County Officials Seeking Distance From Aspects Of SAFE Act

Local leaders in Saratoga County are taking steps to distance the county from provisions under New York’s SAFE Act, one year after its enactment.

This week, Saratoga County Board of Supervisors’ Law and Finance committee advanced a measure proposed by County Clerk Craig Hayner and Sheriff Michael Zurlo to remove the Saratoga County seal from state-issued letters to county residents requesting pistol permit renewals.

Under the SAFE Act, in March, the state will be sending out 3,000 recertification letters to permit holders in Saratoga County.

Hamilton College President Discusses White House Summit

The president of Hamilton College in Clinton, New York was among the leaders of higher education from across the nation who were at the White House yesterday for a conference hosted by the president and first lady on getting low-income students into college. Hamilton president Joan Hinde-Stewart says the discussion involved getting these students into college, helping them pay tuition, and giving them the help and guidance they need to graduate. She says it was a deeply personal issue for her.

City Eyes Future For Historic Downtown Church

The city of Springfield, Massachusetts is continuing preservation efforts on one of the oldest church buildings in New England, while looking to find a place for the property in the plans for downtown urban renewal.

Bids are being solicited by the city of Springfield for repairs to historic Old First Church, a white wood framed building in Court Square in the heart of the city’s downtown.  Patrick Sullivan, the city’s director of buildings management, said it’s estimated the church needs $100,000 in work to repair damage caused by the 2011 tornado.
