Saratoga Area Will Have Plenty Of New Faces In 2014

Credit Lucas Willard / WAMC

For Saratoga Springs, 2013 was a year of transitions. It was an election year featuring high-profile political campaigns, a controversial ballot initiative, and plenty of new faces getting in place for 2014.

On January 1st, 2013, former Saratoga County Clerk Republican Kathy Marchione left her position of more than 15 years to become state Senator for the 43rd District, a seat long held by Roy MacDonald. In February, Governor Andrew Cuomo appointed Democrat Peter Martin to the clerk’s office.

Herb London: Previewing State Of The Union

The State of the Union address by President Obama is a month away, but the content and orientation of that speech can be limned from White House briefings. Rather than discuss failures such as a healthcare website that still rejects applicants or ellipses such as the unrecorded conversations about the U.S. Embassy in Benghazi or political coercion such as the selective IRS vetting process for not-for-profit organizations, the president will concentrate on the deal with Iran as a major achievement.

Rabbi Dan Ornstein: My Masterpiece

She walks up to me after morning services, her face uplifted and bright.  “I wanted to let you know about some great news I got from my son,” she grins.  Those few moments after morning worship before I go back to my office are usually when members of my synagogue tell me their worst news about sadness, illness, death.  Her promise to tell me about something happy intrigues and relieves me.  “He has been writing since he was sixteen,” she begins.  “After more than twenty years of writing professionally, he sold a screenplay for a new movie.  My husband and I will be visiting him on the set

Environmentalists are encouraging citizens to make the holiday season a time for recycling.   "If you walk down the street you will see plastic bags stuck in trees, you will see them in the sewers..."  Saima Anjam  with Environmental Advocates of New York believes disposable bags are usually good for a single trip from the store and have a useful life of about 12 minutes.  The group is encouraging Governor Andrew Cuomo to address New Yorkers' $10 billion disposable bag-per-year habit by imposing a fee on retailers who package consumer purchases in disposable bags.  "In Washington D-C, they
