WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Picture Of Casino Gambling In Capital Region Coming More Into Focus

The picture of casino gambling in New York’s Capital Region is coming more into focus, with word that a Western New York company is seeking possible development in Albany.

According to a local attorney, the Rochester-based Capital Gaming LLC has signed a contract to purchase Tobin’s First Prize Center, the long-vacant site of a former meat packing facility located near I-90 in Albany.

Continued Lack of Congressional Action On Farm Bill Raising Concerns

The Farm Bill sets the nation’s food, nutrition and agriculture policy agenda. It’s generally a five-year bill. The overdue legislation that is being negotiated in Congress expired in 2012 and its provisions have been retained through continuing resolutions.  The new Farm Bill was expected to receive a final vote shortly after Congress returned to session, but negotiations have stalled.

Future Of Electric Cars VS. Frigid NY Temps

In December, the New York Power Authority approved $2 million in funding to help municipal and rural electric cooperative systems in New York State purchase electric-drive vehicles for use in their municipal fleets. But the future for electric cars in New York state is unclear.

Electric cars were popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and came back in vogue during the late 1990s, finding a spot in the marketplace as gasoline/electric hybrids. In the last year, fully-electric cars finally made a comeback in vehicles commercially produced by Nissan and Tesla.
