WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Schools Taking Steps To Enhance Security One Year After Sandy Hook

One year after the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, many school districts claim they are safer than they were last December.

School districts across the country have bolstered school security in the year following the tragic shootings at Sandy Hook that killed 20 children and six educators.

In a recent survey conducted by the New York State School Boards Association on superintendents’ assessment of their schools’ safety, most believed they are more safe than they were at this time last year.

Rogovoy Report for December 13, 2013

First, a quick look back at one of the highlights of the past week before looking ahead to the coming weekend: In my time, I’ve seen literally hundreds if not thousands – probably thousands – of concerts. And the truth is, beginning about 15 years ago, and especially in the past decade, the times are few and far between that I am really blown away by anything I see. You can chalk that up to my having seen so many of the all-time greats, or maybe just because I’m almost all concert-ed out.

Harvard Study Points Way To Conserve Massachusetts Forests

A newly released Harvard University study details the consequences of land-use decisions in Massachusetts.  It warns that current development patterns, if left unchanged, will have consequences for water quality and climate change.

If recent development trends continue Massachusetts would lose 13 percent of its forest land over the next 50 years which would undermine recent land conservation gains, threaten wildlife habitats, put drinking water supplies at risk and result in harsher consequences of climate change.

Hudson Valley Officials Welcome Regional Economic Development Grants

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Wednesday announced that $716 million in regional economic development grants has been awarded around the state. The Mid-Hudson Valley region is on the receiving end of nearly $60 million for 87 projects.
