The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Public Scrutiny Of Casino License Applications Invited

Gaming industry regulators in Massachusetts are set to embark on a lengthy public review process that is expected to end with the awarding of the state’s first casino licenses by the end of May. Several criteria will be examined to determine the final winners of the high-stakes competition

Three casino companies submitted final license applications—each consisting of thousands of pages—by the New Year’s Eve deadline to satisfy the requirements of  the  two-phase  application process established by the Massachusetts  Gaming Commission.

Gov. Cuomo Gives Storm Update

On an 11am conference call with the media,  Governor didn't give the "all clear" just yet, but he did say "Mother nature has moved on somewhat" and the snowfall is pretty much over across the state.  He said his decision to close roadways between midnight and 5 am turned out to be the right call - there were  weather-related fatalities -  Authorities say a 71-year-old woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease has frozen to death after she wandered away from her rural western New York home.

Sheehan Takes Oath: 'A New Era' Begins

Breaking from city tradition in more ways than one, former city treasurer Kathy Sheehan was officially sworn in New Year's Day at Kiernan Plaza in downtown Albany. Fellow Democrat New York Lt. Governor Bob Duffy gave the keynote address, hailing the day as the start of "Mayor Sheehan's era."

Paul Elisha: Pious Fraud

One of this commentator’s  favorite  pundits was the great progressive pamphleteer, Thomas Paine, whose lack of moderation in rhetoric perhaps did more to incite the American Revolution, than any other literary wordsmith of his time, with his fiery 50 page pamphlet: “Common Sense.” Paine’s answer to his critics was simple and straightforward, “Moderation in temper is always a virtue, but moderation in principle is always a vice,” he wrote.
