Rob Edelman: Foreign Titles in 2013

These days, we are long-past the time in which cineastes would excitedly queue up to check out the latest work of art from a filmmaker who is not American: an Ingmar Bergman, say, or a Federico Fellini, an Akira Kurosawa, a Francois Truffaut. Today, with pitifully few exceptions, films with subtitles simply are not widely seen in the U.S. And with few exceptions-- two that come to mind are Michael Haneke and Pedro Almodovar-- there are no foreign filmmakers whose careers match the length and depth of Bergman, Fellini, Kurosawa, Truffaut, and so many others.

Rogovoy Report for December 13, 2013

First, a quick look back at one of the highlights of the past week before looking ahead to the coming weekend: In my time, I’ve seen literally hundreds if not thousands – probably thousands – of concerts. And the truth is, beginning about 15 years ago, and especially in the past decade, the times are few and far between that I am really blown away by anything I see. You can chalk that up to my having seen so many of the all-time greats, or maybe just because I’m almost all concert-ed out.

Harvard Study Points Way To Conserve Massachusetts Forests

A newly released Harvard University study details the consequences of land-use decisions in Massachusetts.  It warns that current development patterns, if left unchanged, will have consequences for water quality and climate change.

If recent development trends continue Massachusetts would lose 13 percent of its forest land over the next 50 years which would undermine recent land conservation gains, threaten wildlife habitats, put drinking water supplies at risk and result in harsher consequences of climate change.
