WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Riverkeeper Raises Concern Over Fracking Waste As De-Icer For NY Roads

A New York environmental group says the use of fracking waste on some of the state’s roads is occurring more than initially thought. The state agency that regulates the use of fracking brine says it ensures the waste does not have high concentrations of pollutants.

The Day Apartheid Came To Upstate NY

Nelson Mandela’s life of 95 years is being honored in Soweto today. But before Mandela was a sainted founding father of modern South Africa, he was a political prisoner in nation split by apartheid.  Local activists still remember the day 32 years ago when the city of Albany briefly took center stage in the struggle.

In his remarks today at the gathering honoring Mandela, President Barack Obama made a passing reference to the Springboks.

Process Winnows Field Of Massachusetts Casino Applicants

MGM Resorts International is looking to get a green light this week from Massachusetts gaming industry regulators to file a final application to build a $800 million resort casino in downtown Springfield. Investigators for the Massachusetts Gaming Commission have found no reason to disqualify the Las Vegas-based company from the casino licensing process.

Slow Population Growth Forecast For Massachusetts

A new study projects continued slow population growth for Massachusetts for the next 20 years. Some parts of western Massachusetts could see population declines according to this forecast.  WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Susan Strate, manager of the Population Estimates Program at the UMass Donahue Institute.

NY Education, PISA And Common Core

Education advocates in New York State have a full plate going into the next legislative session. Students in the United States ranked 36th among nations in mathematics, reading and science, according to the 2012 Programme for International Student Assessment. The test, given to half a million 15- and 16-year-olds worldwide every three years, is regarded as a leading survey of education systems a snapshot of the global state of education.  Young people in Shanghai scored highest of all tested.
