The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Petition Calls For Testing Ban For State’s Youngest Students

Education advocates across New York are calling for a ban on standardized testing in pre-K through second grade.

Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers, kicked off a Thursday conference call to launch a  statewide petition drive to stop expansion of standardized tests in children’s early years.

The petition comes as the union continues to call for a three-year moratorium on using tests aligned to the rigorous Common Core standards for “high stakes” decisions affecting teachers and students.

Advocate For Formerly Incarcerated Women Is Guest Lecturer

The Five College Consortium in western Massachusetts is hosting guest lecturers in social justice advocacy this fall.  Tina Reynolds is co-founder of WORTH, a New York City-based nonprofit that works with currently and formerly incarcerated women. The organization strives to change public perceptions and policy. WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Reynolds.
