WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Enviro Groups To NY Governor: Go Further With Fracking Health Review

Several environmental groups have written to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo asking him to go further in the state’s health review of fracking. Their memo was sent as the state’s GOP chair and pro-fracking groups ratcheted up their call for the governor to lift the fracking moratorium.

The Natural Resources Defense Council and a coalition of environmental and public health groups, sent a letter to Governor Cuomo November 1. Kate Sinding is director of NRDC’s Community Fracking Defense Project. She says the letter is intended to accomplish two goals.

Neighbors Get Peek Inside GlobalFoundries At Open House

GlobalFoundries hosted an open house at its computer chip fabrication facility in the Saratoga County town of Malta Monday evening. 

GlobalFoundries held the event to allow workers’ families and community members to see the facility and get a better understanding of how the company and its Fab 8 semiconductor manufacturing facility operate.

The company operates its Fab 8 campus at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Malta, and employs more than 1,000 workers at the facility.

Paul Elisha: War And Peace

There’s something strangely illusory in the approach (in less than a month) of the 69th  Anniversary of the end of WWII.  For those of us in the inexorably dwindling number of veterans in this category, there are the unsettling news stories of the “Right-Wing surge in Europe,” and the seemingly continuing inability of former allies (This nation included) to achieve peaceful resolutions to still volatile and incendiary ignitions.  These are dramatically fuelled by the wars and continuing intolerance of nations, still at odds over the seeming inequities that defy our abilities to analyze and end them.

Massachusetts Designates New Cultural District In Springfield

The Massachusetts Cultural Council has approved the creation of a cultural district in Springfield. Advocates for the district believe it will help rebrand downtown Springfield.

The cultural district designation will help promote attractions such as the Springfield Museums and Symphony Hall and encourage the growth of art and music festivals and the so-called creative economy. Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno said there are huge benefits to having an official state-recognized cultural district in the heart of the city.
