WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

MGM's China Connection Shadows Springfield Casino Project

A decision on whether MGM Resorts International is suitable to hold a casino license in Massachusetts is expected to be made by gaming industry regulators in the next two months.  Passing the mandatory background investigation in Massachusetts is proving to be no easy feat.

       When casino industry giant Caesars Entertainment, which has stakes in more than 50 casino operations in the United States and seven countries, was abruptly dropped  two weeks ago    as the operator of a proposed Boston casino, it rang alarm bells in Springfield.

The Vote: Declining Turnout

As we approach election day, experts predict low turnout in of local races around the region — as usual. Why are voters staying home?
 
Low  voter turnout was apparent throughout New York during the September primaries. Some attribute it to "upstate dissatisfaction" with politics in general. Whether that's the root cause or not, New York ranks near the bottom of all 50 states when it comes to turnout, as tabulated by the United States Elections Project.

Herbert London: Islam vs. Islamism

It has become fashionable among the cognoscenti to distinguish between Islam and Islamism. In fact, the Quilliam Foundation, focused on religious freedom, has promoted the distinction along with many quite reputable analysts of Islamic behavior. Presumably the latter believes in the imposition of faith over society by violence or law; while the former rejects violence conducting itself as any other religion might. This distinction has a hopeful ring to it since one may embrace the faith and abandon the ideology, thereby stabilizing presently unstable societies.
