WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Gun Buyback To Be Held In Western Massachusetts

A first-ever gun buy-back is taking place Saturday in two mostly rural counties in western Massachusetts—Hampshire and Franklin counties.  People will have  chance to dispose of guns at the police stations in Northampton and Greenfield from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.     WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan, whose office organized the gun buy-back.

Volunteers Ready For River Cleanup Project

Thousands of volunteers will fan out in the Connecticut River watershed in four states on Friday and Saturday to pick up trash and remove debris.   This is the 17th annual “ Source to Sea Cleanup”  organized by the Connecticut River Watershed Council.   WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with the council’s executive director Andrew Fisk.

One of Afghanistan's most notable freedom fighters, women’s rights advocate Malalai Joya, is back in the US this fall for a national tour coinciding with the 12th anniversary of the start of the US war in Afghanistan.    The lecture series  includes several stops across the WAMC listening area. Joya’s tour is sponsored by the United National Antiwar Coalition (UNAC) and Afghan Women’s Mission (AWM).
