WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Sean Eldridge Announces NY Congressional Run

The race is officially on for New York’s 19th congressional district. Democrat Sean Eldridge has announced a 2014 run against incumbent Republican Chris Gibson.

Eldridge’s announcement arrived via video message posted late Sunday night. His widely anticipated run comes nearly two weeks after The Chris Gibson for Congress campaign’s launch of a web video entitled “Our Best Century Yet.” Eldridge, an Ulster County resident, is the founder of Kingston-based Hudson River Ventures, a small business investment fund focused on the Hudson Valley.

NY Gov: Don't Text While Driving

Don't Text and Drive - New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was underlining that mandate in an appearance this morning at a Thruway rest area, as Thruway authorities plan to ramp up penalties for distracted driving.

Despite a beefed-up public awareness campaign and new laws combating distracted driving, New York State Troopers issued 21,500 tickets issued over the summer, compared to 5,000 last year.

UMass On Track To Establish Satellite Campus In Springfield

The University of Massachusetts is poised to establish a first-ever satellite campus. It would be located in downtown Springfield.  Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno has lobbied for several years to get a UMass campus in the city.   WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke earlier this week with the Chairman of the UMass Board of Trustees, Henry Thomas, who is Springfield resident.

Vendors Prepare For Farm Aid 2013

Farm Aid has had a longstanding mission: keep family farms in operation. The mega concert event is being set up today at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, and organizers are working to connect local vendors with local farms to feed the thousands who will attend this weekend’s festival.
