WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

South African anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela has now spent a month in the hospital.

As visitors from around the world share an outpouring of love and support for South Africa’s first democratically elected president, there has also been a question of what his legacy will mean for both South Africa and the world.

Albany Law School Dean Penelope "Penny" Andrews grew up and began studying law in apartheid South Africa before coming to the U.S. in the 1980’s.

Siena Survey: NY Consumer Confidence Up

New numbers just out on consumer confidence in New York State and employment nationwide are leading to cautious optimism from those who monitor the pulse of the economy.

The latest numbers on consumer confidence for New York State show some improvement. The latest New York State Index of Consumer Sentiment survey from Siena College’s Siena Research Institute shows that consumer optimism grew in June for the the second month in a row.

Massachusetts Budget Boosts Summer Job Prospects For Young People

A campaign to encourage Massachusetts employers to provide jobs to teenagers this summer was launched in May in Springfield City Hall

The Massachusetts State Legislature this week approved both a new budget for the fiscal year that began Monday and a supplemental budget for the just concluded fiscal year.  The action saved a summer  jobs program geared toward helping inner-city youth all across the state. It also assured that an anti-crime program in one city that has received national attention will continue.
