The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

State Audit Reveals Nursing Home As Financial Drain On Saratoga County

A recent audit by New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli detailed a deteriorating financial condition in Saratoga County due in part to increasing costs at a subsidized nursing home.

The audit released by the Comptroller’s office found that between January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2012, Saratoga County’s general fund balance decreased 41 percent, from $24.7 million to $10.3 million.

The cause to blame? The increased costs of running Maplewood Manor – a subsidized nursing home facility.

Riverkeeper Alleges Two Violations Amid Bridge Construction

An environmental group in the Hudson Valley has put the New York State Thruway Authority on notice concerning two alleged violations during construction of the replacement Tappan Zee Bridge.  One allegation involves monitoring an endangered fish species.

Westchester County-based Riverkeeper recently filed a notice of intent to sue the state Thruway Authority, Tappan Zee Constructors, and one of the contractors under the Clean Water Act. Here’s Riverkeeper’s Hudson River Program Director Phillip Musegaas.

Paul Elisha: In Our Congressional House...No Traitors Allowed!

On September 24th, 1942, three months shy of his 20th birthday, this combat veteran of WWII in the Pacific stood with several dozen other enlistees, at Fort Dix, N.J., prepared to join the United States Army.  It had taken me eight months after the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor, by the Japanese, to convince my father to sign the permission paper my lack of seniority demanded.  Preliminaries: medical and routine completed, we were called to attention to be sworn in by the officer in charge.  I still recall the oath, by which I swore to defend the United States from all enemies – foreign and domestic.  For me, it has been a life-long impetus for service.
