WAMC's award-winning daily news magazine show brings the listener the latest in local, national and world news. Join Brian Shields each weekday for the very latest.

The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Burlington Mayor Discusses Racism Initiative and Other Issues

Last week, Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger joined a U.S. Conference of Mayors’ initiative against racism and discrimination. It was announced to coincide with commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Weinberger tells WAMC’s North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley that implementing the 10-point plan of action against racism is an appropriate way to commemorate the tragedy.

Paul Elisha: The Still Missing Magic Ingredient

There’s no denying the heat of resentment that prodded America’s colonial rebellion to its ultimate break with British rule and the formation of a new system of governance, controlled and administered by an elected body of its citizens.  In retrospect, however, and given the passage of several centuries for calmer contemplation, this should not condemn every aspect of the British system to infamy and avoidance.  In fact, a thorough and unbiased study of our current system of governance, shows it lacking a mode of service not completely available within any of the three traditional branches of government into which ours is divided.  Closer scrutiny reveals a glaring need for its addition.  A Management Branch could well re-revolutionize the current United States triumvirate system of three governmental branches, all of which are held hostage to the insidious influence of the continuous cycle of elective politics.

NY Report Touts School District Mergers

Smaller school districts facing budget issues and financial tangles may want to consider merging with neighboring schools. That's the gist of a new report issued by the New York State School Boards Association.

The recently merged Oppenheim Ephratah St. Johnsville School District in Montgomery County is regarded by many as a “showcase” model for a successful merger, in the spirit of the NYSSBA report.
