The work of the WAMC News Team is combined each day with news and features from WAMC's National Productions, the BBC, Great Lakes Radio, and Stardate. You can also get a regional weather forecast from Paul Caiano.

The listener also can hear commentaries offered by a range of commentators who span the political spectrum such as former New York Common Cause leader Paul Elisha, former Republican Comptroller candidate Herb London, Professor of International History and Politics Steven Leibo, as well as WAMC's own political observer Alan Chartock. Highlights from the WAMC Listener Comment Line are usually aired on Friday's edition of Midday Magazine.

Director Troy Waffner: 168th New York State Fair

The 168th edition of the New York State Fair begins in 28 days. The annual tradition in Syracuse attracts nearly a million visitors from all over the state and the region. This year the state fair will run for 12 days, from August 21-September 1. For an update on the event we spoke today with the acting Director of the New York State Fair, Troy Waffner, who says the fair maintains its agricultural foundation but has evolved over the years as well.

Oil Trains Under Political Microscope

There have been several developments this week impacting oil trains, the subject of national and local debate.

The U.S. Department of Transportation on Wednesday issued new proposed rules on tankers transporting oil including quickly phasing out the use of old DOT-111 rail cars for moving crude oil and other hazardous liquids. The rules would include new operational requirements to lower operating speeds and enhance braking capabilities for high-hazard flammable trains.
