The Roundtable

Weekdays, 9:00am

WAMC's The Roundtable is an award-winning, nationally recognized eclectic talk program. The show airs from 9am to noon each weekday and features news, interviews, in-depth discussion, listener call-ins, music, and much (much) more! Hosted by Joe Donahue and produced by Sarah LaDuke, The Roundtable tackles serious and lighthearted subjects, looking to explore the many facets of the human condition with civility, respect and responsibility.

The show's hallmark is thoughtful interviews with A-list newsmakers, authors, artists, sports figures, actors, and people with interesting stories to tell. Since hitting the airwaves in May of 2001, The Roundtable has interviewed the likes of Arthur Miller, Kurt Vonnegut, Maya Angelou, Madeleine Albright, Jimmy Carter, John McCain, Bob Dole, Bill O'Reilly, Steve Martin, James Taylor, Bill Cosby, Stephen King, Melissa Etheridge and lots of other really cool people. Plus, Wilco does our theme song. What more can you ask for?

Ben Vereen at Belleayre Music Festival

Actor, singer, dancer Ben Vereen will display his full-range talents at the Belleayre Music Festival during his one-man show, Steppin' Out with Ben Vereen.

Ben's performance is a unique blend of artistry, combining a tribute to Broadway, Frank Sinatra, and a very special tribute to Sammy Davis Jr. Featuring hit songs such as "Defying Gravity," "Mr. Bojangles," "Something's Coming" and "Life is Just a Bowl of Cherries," Ben Vereen's "Steppin' Out" is a contemporary and timeless journey through the Broadway songbook.

After formally studying his craft and earning steady work on Broadway, Ben earned critical recognition for his dazzling performance in Jesus Christ Superstar, Pippin (Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical) and in Funny Lady. Ben was introduced to a more mainstream audience with his crafty portrayal of Chicken George in the landmark TV miniseries Roots, receiving an Emmy nomination.

He joins us to talk about his impression on the revival of Pippin, Bob Fosse, and more.

Drew Magary, The All-American Id

One of my favorite writers working today is Drew Magary, a columnist for Deadspin and Gawker and a GQ correspondent. In Magary style, I often joke – in all caps, of course — that he is the TWAIN OF OUR TIMES. In the age of Tweets, Magary thrives on long form prose that is nakedly honest and blisteringly funny.

"America’s Obsessives" by Joshua Kendall

In this segment we explore the compulsive energy that built a nation. Joshua Kendall puts many American icons on the psychologist's couch in America’s Obsessives.

In this fascinating look at the arc of American history through the lens of compulsive behavior, he shows how some of our nation's greatest achievements-from the Declaration of Independence to the invention of the iPhone-have roots in the disappointments and frustrations of early childhood.

Starting with the obsessive natures of some of Silicon Valley's titans, including Steve Jobs, Kendall moves on to profile seven iconic figures, such as founding father Thomas Jefferson, licentious librarian Melvil Dewey, condiment kingpin H. J. Heinz, slugger Ted Williams, and Estee Lauder.
