Monday - Friday, 2pm - 3pm

Vox Pop is WAMC's live call-in talk program. Guests with expertise in areas ranging from Astronomy to George Washington speak with WAMC's hosts and answer questions posed by WAMC listeners. We also have a number of forums and guests who are regulars to Vox Pop such as our Science Forum and Gardening program.

Every Monday is a "Medical Monday."  Every Friday is a "Food Friday."

Vox Pop : Medical Monday - Dr. Gregg Gerety : 3/11/13

Joining us today on Medical Monday to talk about endocrinology is Dr. Gregg Gerety.

After graduating from the University of Vermont, Dr. Gerety went to medical school at the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New York. He studied internal medicine in Albany, and completed his fellowship in endocrinology at Yale in 1988.

Board-certified in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism,  Dr. Gerety is a past-president of the American Diabetes Association - New York State affiliate. WAMC's Alan Chartock hosts.

Vox Pop : Open Forum - The Minimum Wage : 3/6/13

In his State of the Union Address last month, President Barack Obama called on congress to pass an increase to the federal minimum wage, raising it from its current rate $7.25 per hour to $9 per hour.

This week, House and Senate Democrats introduced legislation to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour, more than a dollar higher than Obama proposed.

Iowa Senator Tom Harkin and California Representative George Miller say their bill, introduced yesterday, would boost the minimum by 2015, followed by automatic annual increases tied to changes in the cost of living.

The budget cuts known as sequestration took effect last Friday, and while the overall effects of the cuts on national and local economies and government efficiency have yet to be realized, the effect of the cuts on the national political landscape may be coming into focus this week.

Today on Vox Pop we welcome Dr. Frank Akawi of Greenfield Animal Hospital in Greenfield Center, New York.

A native Jordanian, Dr. Akawi studied animal science as an undergraduate in Baghdad. Once in the United States, he earned a masters degree in reproductive physiology, an MBA, and a PhD in pet health management. He also obtained a veterinary degree from Ross University.
