The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Early Childhood Education Organization Returns To Tornado Ravaged Neighborhood

Officials in Springfield, Massachusetts have marked another step forward in the city’s recovery from the tornado that caused extensive damage 26 months ago.

With children singing and bright white, blue, and gold balloons buffeted by a gentle breeze, Square One celebrated the opening of its new center on Main Street in the South End Neighborhood on Wednesday.  It is just two blocks from where the early childhood education organization’s preschool and administrative offices were destroyed when the tornado roared through Springfield on June 1st, 2011.

NY Congressman Says No To U.S. Military Strikes Against Syria

At least one congressional representative in the Hudson Valley says he will vote “no” on President Obama’s request to authorize military strikes against the Syrian government in response to the alleged use of chemical weapons.

President Obama has asked Congress to vote on the strikes. Republican House Speaker John Boehner says he will support the call for the U.S. to take action against Syria, yet one of his Republican colleagues in the Hudson Valley - Congressman Chris Gibson – says that’s not a good idea.

Business Group Pushes for Tax Cuts, Fracking to Revive Upstate Economy

An upstate pro-business group says regions of the state north of Westchester need special attention in the coming months to help the floundering economy.  The group Unshackle Upstate is proposing a series of tax cuts, as well as a start to hydraulic fracturing as the remedy.

NY State Police Exam: Deadline Approaching

New York State police are reminding those interested in joining  their ranks that this is the final week to sign up for the entrance exam.

The New York State Police entrance exam is being given for the first time since 2008. Those who pass the test will get on an eligibility list that will remain in effect for four years. Candidates must be between 20 and 29 years old and have 60 college credits at the time of appointment.
