Primary Candidate's Petition Matter Goes To Court

A Democratic primary candidate for Rockland County executive knocked off the ballot last week is fighting back, and the matter will be decided in court.

Rockland County Democratic Board of Elections Commissioner Kristen Stavisky says Village of Suffern Mayor Dagan LaCorte was removed last week from the ballot in the race for Rockland County executive.

She says the 1,926 signatures fell short of the 2,000 required, thus invalidating the petition. She says signatures were ruled invalid for the following reasons.

Mass. Governor Rides Into Pittsfield In Support Of Passenger Rail Expansion

Governor Patrick joins state officials and others in Pittsfield after riding the rails from the Connecticut border along the Housatonic Railroad.

On Monday, Governor Patrick, Secretary of Transportation Richard Davey, and others boarded a train on the Housatonic Railroad and rode from the Connecticut border to Pittsfield.

The symbolic trip came after the governor had sought more than $1 billion in new revenues for transportation in his initial fiscal year 2014 budget proposal, a plan that contained dedicated funding for several priority projects, including $113 million for the rail expansion in Berkshire County.

More Voter Referendums On Gaming Projects Set In Massachusetts

Hard Rock has begun the campaign to convince voters in West Springfield, Massachusetts to endorse the company’s plan for a resort casino. It will be the second western Massachusetts casino project to face a make or break referendum.

       Hard Rock officials will host a public grand opening Tuesday for the campaign headquarters for the September 10th casino referendum.  The event will mark the formal launch of the “West Side Yes” pro-casino campaign.

Prison Closure Announcement Rankles Guard Union

Correction officers say they are still in “shock” that late on a July Friday, with very little advance warning, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s prison agency announced the closure of four prisons within the next year. And they are asking the legislature to rescind the closures.

Poughkeepsie Celebrates Ratification Anniversary

The 225th anniversary of New York’s ratification of the U.S. Constitution is Friday. Anniversary events are scheduled in the city that hosted the ratifying convention – Poughkeepsie – and elsewhere in the Hudson Valley. We get more from WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne.

The 225th anniversary of New York joining the country as the 11th state comes amid the 300th anniversary of Dutchess County. Will Tatum is Dutchess County historian.
