The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Funding Awarded To Remove Asbestos From Former Mill Buildings

New York Governor Cuomo did not get all he wanted during the recently concluded legislative session, as abortion rights and campaign finance reform faltered in the final days of the session. But Cuomo seems to be putting the best face on what he did achieve and is trying to move on with plans that include an investigation of the legislature.

Duke Study Links Hydrofracking To Water Contamination

A new Duke University study links hydraulic fracturing, the controversial gas drilling process, to water contamination. But, like similar studies in the past, there are pros and cons, and questions linger.

The study, co-authored by Rob Jackson, a professor of environmental sciences at Duke’s Nicholas School of the Environment, found that homeowners living near shale gas wells appear to be at higher risk of drinking water contamination from stray gases.

    Scott Harshbarger, the former Massachusetts Attorney General and former president of Common Cause was  the featured speaker at an anti-casino forum in Springfield.  The event, sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts attracted about 300 people to Christ Church Cathedral.  A citywide voter referendum on MGM Resort’s Springfield casino development is on July 16th.    WAMC”s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Harshbarger

NRC Issues Updated Environmental Report For Indian Point

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has updated an environmental study of New York’s Indian Point nuclear power plant as part of the plant’s license renewal application. Environmentalists are taking issue with the study.

The NRC update to the Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement released in December 2010 incorporates new information about the possible impacts of Buchanan-based Indian Point on the aquatic environment. Here’s NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan.

The recent release of a report by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences entitled, “The Heart of the Matter,” has inspired much discussion in the halls of universities and the halls of Congress regarding the importance of the humanities versus the sciences in the education of our nation’s young people. As stated by Jennifer Schuessler in the New York Times, this report, commissioned by a bipartisan group of legislators is “…  intended as a rallying cry against the entrenched idea that the humanities and social sciences are luxuries that employment-minded students can ill afford.”
