Berkshire Lawmakers Undertake SNAP Challenge

Massachusetts lawmakers in the Berkshires are the latest politicians participating in a national anti-hunger campaign to raise awareness about what people on the Federal Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program face. 

The entire Berkshire statehouse delegation, including Representative Gail Cariddi of North Adams, Representative Paul Mark of Peru, Representative Tricia Farley-Bouvier of Pittsfield, Representative William “Smitty” Pignatelli of Lenox, and State Senator Benjamin Downing of Pittsfield, are all currently undertaking the so-called “SNAP challenge.”

Construction Begins To Replace Tornado Damaged School

Springfield, Massachusetts continues to rebuild from the tornado that caused extensive damage to the city 25 months ago.  A groundbreaking ceremony was held today to begin construction on a new elementary school to replace one that was rendered unusable by the tornado.

Minisink Compressor Opponents Ask U.S. Senator To Stand With Them

A demonstration got under way Tuesday afternoon outside the New York City office U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. The protesters want the senator to take a stand on a compressor station already up and running in their Orange County hamlet.

Opponents of the Minisink compressor station, which was built on a residential road in the Hamlet of Westtown, traveled to midtown Manhattan Tuesday to urge Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to break her silence. Asha Canalos is with the group “Stop the Minisink Compressor Station,” and one of those demonstrating.

Governor Patrick Praises Post Incarceration Program

The Hampden County Sheriff's Department After Incarceration Support Systems one-stop reentry center is located in this building in Mason Square in Springfield, MA.

A program that has reduced recidivism rates was praised today by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.  The governor toured the program operated by the office of Hampden County Sheriff  Michael Ashe. 

Since 2007, the Hampden County Sheriff’s office has operated a one-stop center for newly released inmates. Located in a nondescript one- story brick building in a tough Springfield neighborhood, the center helps former inmates transition back into the community with a range of support services.

The waiting list for federal funds to help homeowners and businesses rebuild in the wake of flooding across Central New York and the Mohawk Valley is growing.

The flash flooding brought on by the heavy rains of June 27 and 28 devastated many communities across Central New York. Residents in many flooded communities along the Mohawk River are waiting for help - looking to Albany and Washington for assistance in cleanup and rebuilding.
