The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Berkshire Lawmakers React To FY 2014 Budget, Vetoes

Lawmakers in the Berkshires are reacting to the fiscal year 2014 budget signed by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick on Friday.

Last week, Governor Patrick signed a $33.6 billion state budget into law. Patrick’s initial budget proposal called for significant investments in education, which lawmakers in the Berkshires supported.

Massachusetts State Senator Dan Wolf - Flying Towards The Top Of Beacon Hill

Massachusetts State Senator Dan Wolf

Dan Wolf wants to go from the cockpit to the governor’s office. Wolf is a state senator from Cape Cod, and one of the founders of the regional airline Cape Air. He is seeking the Democratic nomination in an increasingly crowded field of candidates who want to replace Governor Deval Patrick who is not seeking re-election next year. Speaking with WAMC’s Brian Shields, Wolf says he began Cape Air as a mechanic and pilot, which gives him the right experience for the governor’s job.

Mass. Governor Signs FY 2014 Budget, Vetoes Transportation Funding

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick today signed the fiscal year 2014 budget into law and vetoed millions of dollars dedicated toward transportation and local aid in a bid to pressure lawmakers to accept his revisions to a still unresolved transportation finance bill.

Governor Patrick addressed reporters at a press conference after signing the $33.6 billion spending plan. He paid specific attention to programs that aim to close the achievement gap, reduce healthcare costs, and prevent youth violence.

Welch Unveils Legislation to Assure Privacy Rights as Drone Use Increases

Vermont Congressman Peter Welch and ACLU Vermont Executive Director Alan Gilbert used the Chittenden County Courthouse as the backdrop to express their concerns about the increasing domestic use of drones. Welch, a Democrat, said he will introduce legislation to assure privacy rights are not infringed as more and more law enforcement, businesses and private entities use the technology.

Patrick Administration Proposes New Ban On Commercial Food Waste

This week, officials from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs proposed a ban on commercial food waste beginning in July 2014 that would aim to divert food and organic waste from landfills and support disposal through anaerobic digestion, a process that can transform the discarded material to energy.
