Liz Benjamin: There's More(land) Where That Came From

It may be difficult for legislators to truly relax on their summer vacations this year, with Gov. Andrew Cuomo's latest Moreland Act Commission about to swing into high gear.

Cuomo wasn't kidding when he said he planned to move quickly on convening the commission to investigate the state's woefully loophole riddled campaign finance system following the Legislature's failure to pass any anti-corruption reforms before the session's end late week (or early this weekend, given the Senate's Friday-to-Saturday all-nighter).

Dick De Veaux, Williams College - Troubleshooting The NSA's Data Collection Programs

Dick De Veaux

The whereabouts of alleged NSA leaker Edward Snowden is only the latest mystery surrounding the agency’s phone and internet surveillance programs that were largely clandestine up until about three weeks ago.

For Dick De Veaux, professor of statistics in the department of mathematics and statistics at Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, news of the programs wasn’t surprising. Since 2004 De Veux has been taking part in a summer program organized by the NSA to bring some of the best technical minds together and troubleshoot their data collection and analysis programs.

Two NY Congressmen Continue Pushing For A Farm Bill

Credit Michael Cannon, flickr

The five-year Farm Bill was defeated Thursday in the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 234-195. Two Congressmen from the Hudson Valley share a similar goal with the federal Farm Bill, yet voted differently.

Republican Congressman Chris Gibson and Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney sit on the House Agriculture Committee, and while both voted to advance the bill from there in May, they cast different votes Thursday. Gibson voted in favor of the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management, or FARRM, Act of 2013, and says he was disappointed with the outcome.
