The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Mixed Reaction from Farm and Food Advocates to Farm Bill Failure

Two NY Congressmen Continue Pushing For A Farm Bill

The five-year Farm Bill was defeated Thursday in the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 234-195. Two Congressmen from the Hudson Valley share a similar goal with the federal Farm Bill, yet voted differently.

Republican Congressman Chris Gibson and Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney sit on the House Agriculture Committee, and while both voted to advance the bill from there in May, they cast different votes Thursday. Gibson voted in favor of the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management, or FARRM, Act of 2013, and says he was disappointed with the outcome.

NY Gov. Cuomo Achieves Partial Win on Agenda

Deals have been reached between Governor Cuomo and legislative leaders on siting new casinos and creating tax free zones at college campuses. But a bill on abortion rights was struggling, and reform measures appear dead for the session. 

The agreement on casinos would allow four resort style gambling centers; one in the Capital Region, one in the Southern Tier, and possibly two in the Catskills, if voters approve the change to the state’s constitution in the fall.     

Nassau and Suffolk Counties would  be allowed to open more slot machines, under the terms of the bill.
