The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Stephen Gottlieb: The Gay Marriage Cases

Sunday night, my wife and I attended a Persian Nowruz or New Year’s festival, with many friends. We celebrated the best and happiest of the traditions they had left behind, along with other Americans who had come to take part. While celebrating the rebirth of Spring, we were also celebrating freedom with friends who had become refugees, whose humanity and efforts to use their skills to help others had become unwelcome to Iranian authorities.

Exception To Tax Cap Law Sought For Casino Property

The city of Springfield is seeking an exception to Proposition 2 ½ , the Massachusetts property tax cap law, when it comes to casinos.

   An $800 million resort casino could mean tens of millions of dollars annually in additional property taxes for Springfield.  But Mayor Domenic Sarno said the city will not get the full financial benefits from a casino development unless a change is made to Prop 2 ½.

Despite early expectations, New York budget includes tax increase extensions

The new New York state budget that lawmakers are enacting this week contains a tax package that includes both tax breaks and tax increases. The spending plan comes just two months after Governor Andrew Cuomo  said there would not be any new taxes in the budget.

On January 22, when Governor Cuomo introduced his budget plan, he said his proposal did not include any new taxes.

“No new taxes in the budget again,” Cuomo said. “That is what is working for us, it has signaled a new day in New  York.

Mary Bonauto, GLAD - The importance of the same sex marriage cases now before SCOTUS

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments this week in to cases involving gay marriage. The nation’s highest court will hear the cases tomorrow and Wednesday. Mary Bonauto is the civil right project director at the Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders. She tells WAMC’S Brian Shields that the cases are monumental.

Blair Horner: Obamacare's Third Birthday

This past weekend marked the third anniversary of passage of the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare.”  This is the ACA’s big year; this Fall Americans will be allowed to start enrolling in health insurance plans.  Starting on January 1, 2014, virtually all Americans will be required to have health insurance – either from the government, their employer, or through a health exchange.  Yet, even at this late date, many Americans are still unsure of its impact.

Anti-Crime Task Force Launches In Western Massachusetts

An anti-crime task force was  launched on Friday to help almost 50 mostly small towns in western Massachusetts combat drugs, guns and gangs. 

   The members of the task force, most of whom will be working undercover, were sworn in Friday at the Northampton office of the Northwestern District Attorney.  The top priority is to disrupt the distribution of drugs, which District Attorney David Sullivan said is at the root of most crime in Hampshire and Franklin Counties.

The Show Goes On At Landmark Albany Theatre

The Palace Theatre's new management team: Owen Smith, Kevin Johnson and Holly Brown.

The Palace Theatre, the grand cultural and entertainment facility that sits in the heart of downtown Albany, will soldier on. A new management team promises to keep the venue’s momentum, and traditions alive.

The RKO Palace's doors first opened in October 1931. Built during the Depression, it was the largest theatre in a city already noted for having several opulent movie houses. A nickel would buy an afternoon of entertainment.

The Palace was sold to the Fabian chain in the early 1940s. Fabian operated it until closure in September, 1969.
