Officials Await Word on Funds to Protect Land in Columbia County

A collective of agencies, institutions and individuals is working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to prevent hundreds of acres of pristine land in Columbia County from falling into the hands of developers. Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Dave Lucas reports.

Officials have their fingers crossed that the federally-supported Forest Legacy Program will help a band of groups including the Columbia Land Conservancy, Darrow School and the Berkshire Farm Center and Services For Youth, permanently protect 13-hundred-ten acres located in Canaan and New Lebanon.

Undocumented Youths Advocate for DREAM Act Ahead of Elections

Undocumented youths across the country are seeking to bring attention to Congressional candidates who oppose the DREAM Act. WAMC’s Lucas Willard reports…

The DRM Action Coalition hosted a conference call this week where young undocumented activists announced the candidates they wish to bring attention to for their opposition to the DREAM Act. In 2010, the House of Representatives passed the original DREAM Act, but the bill was filibustered in the Senate. Now, ahead of the upcoming election, young DREAMers are speaking out.

Karen Hitchcock - Penn State: Lessons Not Learned

On Tuesday of this week, Jerry Sandusky received a de facto life sentence of 30-60 years for raping, abusing and assaulting some ten young boys.   To this day, Mr. Sandusky denies his guilt and places the blame for his conviction on what he feels is the false testimony of his many victims.  As The New York Times stated in an editorial following the sentencing, “The case of Jerry Sandusky for the serial raping of young boys while a coach in Penn State’s football program ended Tuesday as it began: in denial and delusion.”

Help Offered To Homeless Veterans In Western Massachusetts

Veterans seek help at the "Western Massachusetts Stand Down" held in the Greek Cultural Center at St.George's Church in Springfield MA

The Department of Veterans Affairs says it is making progress in reducing the number of homeless veterans in the country. But the critical need was evident at an event Friday in Springfield Massachusetts.  WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill reports.

   Hundreds of veterans looking for help filed into a church social hall for an opportunity to speak with representatives from more than 60 agencies and programs, including health care providers, counseling services, and housing specialists.  There were free meals and each could leave with a bag of clothes.
