Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Rabbi Dan Ornstein: Wise Blood

Several weeks ago, as I planned my overly ambitious summer reading list, I came across my son’s copy of Flannery O’Connor’s famous first novel, Wise Blood.  Contemplating whether or not to read the book, and always looking for an excuse to talk to my adult child, I called him to inquire about what he thought of it. “You know, dad,” he began, “It is an intensely religious novel, all about a man who is trying to  rid himself of faith in Jesus and God, yet who fails to do so.  As a rabbi and religious person, you’ll like it.”

Returning Veterans Turn To Agriculture

As veterans come home to New York from military service, many are considering careers in agriculture.

We've heard many stories about young vets returning from service, unable to find jobs, having difficulties re-adjusting to civilian life. Yet, there are many opportunities available: among them, programs accentuating farming in its various forms. Cornell University has developed a Small Farms Program to support returning veterans.

Tappan Zee Loan Approved, But Questions Over Tolls Remain

A key oversight board approved half of the amount Governor Cuomo had sought for a loan from a clean water fund to help pay for the construction of the Tappan Zee Bridge on Wednesday. But the meeting included accusations from a board member that Cuomo Administration officials are trying to hide bad news about future toll hikes on the bridge and the rest of the New York State Thruway.

Keith Strudler: Jeter's Last All Star Game

Talking about Derek Jeter is like talking about Ronald Reagan. No matter what you may think of him, it’s almost irreverent to say anything bad out loud. That was certainly the case at last night’s MLB all-star game, where Jeter was given a standing ovation that would approach Cats on its final Broadway appearance. For over a minute, the Minneapolis crowd and every other player on the field stood and applauded the 40 year old when he came to bat in the first inning of his final all-star appearance. That even included St. Louis pitcher Adam Wainwright, who took off his glove and stepped off the mound to congratulate the Yankees star.
