Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Downsizing Will Impact Western Mass. Military Base

The Air Force is downsizing a base in western Massachusetts.  The Westover Air Force Reserve Base in Chicopee is going to lose both aircraft and jobs.

The Air Force is going to transfer half of the fleet of 16 C-5 cargo planes now assigned to Westover to a base in Texas and eliminate 334 jobs.  The changes are the result of deep budget cuts at the Pentagon.  Brig. Gen. Steven Vautrain, the commander of the 439th airlift wing at Westover, said people on the base were saddened, but not terribly surprised by Monday’s announcement.

Senate Task Force On Heroin And Opioid Addiction Holds Hearing In Plattsburgh

Gov. Patrick Launches Open Cloud Computing Project In Holyoke

A new public cloud computing infrastructure is going to be developed in Massachusetts, as the state looks to position itself as a leader in the new sector known as “big data.” 

Massachusetts will put $3 million toward developing the open cloud project. The announcement was made by Governor Deval Patrick Friday at the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center in Holyoke.

" Massachusetts Open Cloud will be a virtual laboratory to big data researchers and innovators in industry, academia , and government all across the Commonwealth."

Samuels: Medicaid Reform Needed From Albany

For years, county officials across New York have been calling on state leaders in Albany to give them relief from the mandates that are handed down from the state capitol and Medicaid reform is often at the top of the list of those mandates. The latest call for Medicaid relief comes from Bill Samuels, a New York City businessman, political activist and founder of the group Effective NY, which has been critical of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s policies.

Canada Mandates Phase Out Or Refit Of Rail Tank Cars
