The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

HV Congresswoman Denounces Violence Against Israel

New York Congresswoman Nita Lowey, the Israeli consul general in New York, and local Jewish organization leaders are denouncing the escalation of violence against Israel. This comes as media reports say Israel today shot down a Hamas drone.

Democratic Congresswoman Nita Lowey, the ranking member on the House Appropriations Committee, denounced rocket attacks against Israel as the clash between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas continues.

There is going to be another change in top management of public safety in the second- largest city in western Massachusetts.

   Chicopee Mayor Richard Kos Monday announced the planned retirement of   Fire Chief Stephen Burkott, which is expected within a year. Burkott, 62, has been on the Chicopee Fire Dept.  41 years, the last dozen as chief.

  " It truly was, or is, the best job in the world," said Burkott.

Groups Urge No Vote On Tappan Zee Bridge Loan

Environmentalists are urging a key review board to vote no on a request from the Cuomo Administration to help finance the rebuilding of a major Thruway bridge with a fund designed for municipal clean water projects.  

Governor Cuomo’s administration wants to use money from a revolving loan fund, designed to help local governments keep their sewer and water treatment systems up to date and their drinking water clean, to instead help pay for the massive Tappan Zee Bridge replacement project.

Program Seeks To Fill Void In Manufacturing Workforce Training

With manufacturers in Massachusetts struggling to find trained people to hire, Governor Deval Patrick today announced a pilot program between two community colleges funded by a partnership that includes some of the state’s biggest companies.

The program run jointly by Springfield Technical Community College and Holyoke Community College aims to take unemployed and under-employed people and give them the skills needed to get an entry level job in manufacturing.  Governor Patrick, who announced the pilot program at STCC, called it vital to enhancing the state’s competitive edge.

NY Representatives Praise Bipartisan Workforce Training Bill

New York Congressional representatives are praising efforts in the House to pass a bill focused on strengthening local workforce training programs. The bill that would allow federal dollars to enhance existing programs passed with wide bi-partisan support. 

In a 415-6 vote, Congress recently passed the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act.

A version in the Senate was also approved 95-3, and the bill is headed to the president’s desk.
