Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Empire State College Inaugurates New President

In Saratoga Springs, officials from the State University of New York gathered to attend the inauguration of the fourth president of Empire State College.

At a ceremony held during SUNY’s annual All College Conference at the Saratoga Springs City Center, Dr. Merodie Hancock was officially inaugurated as the fourth president of Empire State College.

Hancock was asked how she felt being the first woman to head the Empire State College network.

On March 5th, Quebec’s Premier called a provincial election to take place April 7th. Pauline Marois, leader of the Parti Québécois, and her advisors were making a calculated move to convert the minority government to a majority in the Quebec National Assembly. Worker-owned Upholstery Shop Brings Jobs To Poor Neighborhood

A community partnership is promoting an old business model – the worker- owned cooperative – as a way to revitalize the poorest neighborhoods of Springfield, Massachusetts.

An upholstery shop on the third floor of a century old factory building in Springfield’s South End neighborhood is the first business venture launched by the Wellspring collaborative.  Formed in 2011 it is a unique partnership of large local employers such as hospitals and universities, community groups, labor organizations, nonprofits and government agencies.

Marchione Defends Land Purchase Amid Reports Of FBI Investigation

Republican New York State Senator Kathy Marchione of Halfmoon invited local media today to tour a parcel of land she owns that is reportedly part of an FBI investigation.

As reported in an article published by the Albany Times Union Wednesday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in association with the New York Attorney General’s office, is investigating a 2007 land purchase by Senator Marchione and her husband.

Keith Strudler: Race And The NCAA

I went to the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan last weekend. Most of my time there was spent listening to my 4 year old Elliot scream about wanting to see the T-Rex, which we thankfully did do. But in between scavenging for dinosaurs, we did manage some time in the space exhibit, which was far above my sleepwalking through two semesters of college astronomy. But one exhibit I did enjoy was looking through glasses with prisms for lenses. It distorted everything you looked at, and in this case turned everything upside down, which made it hard to give someone a high five, the manipulation of this experiment.
