Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Glens Falls Prepares For Basketball Tournament Weekend

Thousands of spectators are expected head to Glens Falls for the return of a statewide high school basketball tournament this weekend. But the long-term sports future in the city is once again unclear. 

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys’ Basketball Championships will return to the Glens Falls Civic starting Friday afternoon and running through Sunday.

The Civic Center has been home to the state tourney ever since its rebirth three decades ago. Jeremy Heulsing, general manager of the venue, said this year, thousands are expected to attend.

Albany County Sidetracks Oil Expansion At City Port

Albany County has responded to mounting concerns voiced by city of Albany residents over oil trains and oil expansion at the Port of Albany.

"It's gratifying that the county of Albany has stepped into the void and is taking action."  Earthjustice staff attorney Chris D'Amato echoes the sentiments of a variety of green groups that have come forward lauding Albany County Executive Dan McCoy's decision to take a stand against plans to build oil heating facilities at the port that would likely increase the number of oil trains rolling through riverside neighborhoods.

NY AG Schneiderman Announces Legislation To Kill "Zombie" Properties

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman was in Troy with several other Capital Region Democrats today to discuss new ways to help homeowners facing foreclosure across the state.

Attorney General Schneiderman joined local and state officials and housing advocates at the Troy Rehabilitation & Improvement Program, Inc. to announce two pieces of legislation aimed at aiding homeowners facing foreclosure and helping municipalities deal with vacant properties.
