Northeast Report feature reports from WAMC News bureau chiefs...plus commentary, arts news and interviews, the latest weather forecast and an afternoon business wrap-up. The program is hosted by WAMC Senior Correspondent Brian Shields who has been with WAMC for 24 years as senior news anchor, host and reporter.

Rare Artifact, Misidentified,Found In Museum Storage

The Springfield Museums will soon put on public display a rare anthropological treasure that had been misidentified and kept in storage for more than a century.  Officials  at the science museum in Springfield, Massachusetts announced the discovery today.

Officials at the Springfield Museums say they have authenticated an artifact in the permanent collection as a mid- 19th Century Tlingit helmet that likely belonged to a warrior for a tribe of the indigenous peoples in southeast Alaska.  There are fewer than 100 Tlingit war helmets known to be in existence.

A bankrupt energy company is suing the Cuomo Administration over the long delayed decision on whether to allow hydrofracking in New York.   Their attorney says the action was prompted by remarks made by Governor Cuomo and his Health Commissioner earlier this week.

It you watched the closing moments of last week’s football game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers, you may have felt like you had seen it before, like it was a scene out of Groundhog Day. For those who missed it, the plotline went something like this. Dallas quarterback Tony Romo led his team to the brink of victory, only to gamble it away with a series of ill-conceived, unnecessarily risky passes that resulted in game altering interceptions. Specifically here, all Dallas really had to do in the closing minutes of the game was simply run the ball and run the clock. But Romo, forever the gunslinger, threw wildly into defensive traffic. Green Bay picked it off, scored the go-ahead touchdown, and revived a narrative that’s older than the Cowboys’ stadium itself.

Massachusetts Voters May Decide Bottle Bill Expansion

A coalition that includes environmentalists, consumer advocates, and municipal officials is making another push in Massachusetts to update the bottle deposit law.

Three decades after Massachusetts voters approved a nickel deposit on cans and bottles of soda and beer, a question may appear on the 2014 ballot to include bottled water, teas, and sports drinks in the beverage deposit law.   Secretary of State Bill Galvin has certified the possible ballot question received more than the nearly 69,000 valid signatures required.
