One Regents Board Member Replaced, Three Remain

The state legislature replaced one member of the New York State Board of Regents, but allowed three others to remain, in elections held for the state’s top educational policy board.  The vote featured complaints from Republican Senators who voted against all of the candidates to demonstrate their displeasure with the state’s implementation of the new Common Core.

Markey Calls For Expanded Treatment To Address Drug Abuse Crisis

U.S. Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts is calling for a three pronged approach to the current drug abuse crisis that has produced an alarming spike in deaths blamed on heroin overdoses.

Senator Markey wants an expanded effort to prevent overdose deaths, increased availability of treatment for drug addiction, and to speed the rollout of new and improved treatments.

" We have to get at this issue and do it soon, because it has already doubled the number of deaths in Massachusetts in the last ten years and it will double it again. That is why I'm concerned about it."

Estate Tax Provision Uncertain In NYS Assembly

Next Wednesday, both houses of the New York State legislature are due to release their one house budget proposals, which they will then use to negotiate a final spending plan with Governor Andrew Cuomo. Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, in an interview with NYS-PBS's New York Now and public radio stations, says Assembly Democrats are not yet on board with part of Cuomo’s plan to cut the estate tax.

Michael Meeropol: The Affordable Care Act And Employment Growth

I assume most of our listeners have heard of the columnist Charles Krauthammer.  Recently, he has been on a tear attempting to convince his readers that the Affordable Care Act is causing a reduction in employment.  He understands that it is no longer possible to get away with falsely asserting that the Congressional Budget Office prediction that the ACA will cause a decline in hours worked means an increase in involuntary unemployment.   Instead he argues that the voluntary decline in work because people are no longer tied to their jobs to get health insurance is somehow a terrible thing for the economy.
