Up Next: Health Care Surcharges?

A new "fee" tacked on customers’ bills by a Southern restaurant chain could be a preview of things to come.

Several Gator's Dockside restaurants across central Florida have added what they’re calling an "Affordable Care Act Surcharge" of 1 percent to all customers' bills. It is claimed that the surcharge will help pay the healthcare costs for their 500 full-time employees.

Some believe the move may be politically motivated, while others contend it demonstrates “transparency”: instead of just raising prices, patrons see exactly why they're paying a little bit more.

Montgomery County Executive Delivers First State Of The County Address

 Montgomery County Executive Matt Ossenfort gave an energetic presentation at a breakfast hosted by the Fulton-Montgomery Regional Chamber of Commerce, discussing his first two months in the new position and what he’s looking forward to accomplishing throughout his term.  Ossenfort is the first county executive in Montgomery County, and with seven of nine county legislators new to the board, he pushed his campaign message of launching a “fresh start” in county government under its new structure.

Gambling Industry Advances In Massachusetts

The effort to bring Las Vegas-style gambling to Massachusetts hit a milestone today when regulators awarded the first casino license.  The Massachusetts Gaming Commission awarded a license to Penn National Gaming to operate a slot machine parlor at a harness race  track in Plainville on the Rhode Island border.  WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Clyde Barrow, a professor of public policy at UMass Dartmouth, who specializes in the gaming industry.

Capital District Democratic Congressman Paul Tonko and President, CEO & Commissioner of Empire State Development Kenneth Adams hosted the hour-long "telephone town hall" with citizens, fielding questions and chatting about highlight federal and state efforts at economic development and job creation.
